Gone With The Wind

And just like that the knitting mojo is gone. It’s not really gone, but rather resisting.  My mojo has set up a splinter cell against the projects in my life and have been leading a steady stream of attacks, weakening the defences of sweaters, mittens, and scarves alike.  I will not give in though. I will not cast on anything new no matter how badly my heart desires it until I have finished one damn thing. That thing, being the Mr’s sweater. I have one sleeve and a collar left. I can make the push in a weekend, but it won’t be happening this weekend.

This weekend will be dedicated to unearthing the guest bedroom and removing 3 metric tons of crap shoved in there. See, Rebecca’s coming in like two weeks. That gives us two solid weekends to get this place habitable.  I don’t know where we are going to put all the crap we clean out of there, but I will figure that out Saturday.  Before and after pictures will be produced inducing you, dear reader into a jaw dropping of epic proportions. Seriously, there’s barely a path in that room right now.  I am going to war against the junk armed with just a vacuum and my wits.

In a random note, and going against the “no new yarn till may” promise I made myself, last Thursday one of the ladies in my knit group gave me a gift certificate in appreciation for teaching a free class on how to use Ravelry.  I’m so incredible appreciative of it and now have to figure out which yarn to buy which is turning out to be quite the task.  Just goes to show you how the random acts of kindness from people can really make your day. :)

I promise to have an FO soon, hopefully the Mr’s sweater which really needs to get off my needles and out of my mind so I can work on other newer more fun projects.

One Hat, Two Hat.

Dudes, I actually finished something, two somethings. Bring out the ticker tape parade, Preita has found her mojo.

Koolhaas gone wrong.

Koolhaas gone wrong.

Pattern: Koolhass gone wrong which resulted in the Domhaas renaming. Non-knitters won’t be able to see it easily (if ever) Knitters will see the random stripe of different cables across my noggin. Thankfully, I finished my mistake so that it can now be called a “design element” (brings out her finger quotes for dramatic effect)
Yarn: Berroco Cuzco which is ridiculously soft and smooshy used almost the whole skein with just a few yard left over (LOVE THAT!)

Nothing to say about this hat that I (and 3002 other knitters on Ravelry) haven’t already said. Still of my favorite hat patterns ever and one of the only repeat performances in my knit repertoire.

NEXT!

Sometimes you just need a huge ass pom pom on your head.

Sometimes you just need a huge ass pom pom on your head.

Pattern: My own
Yarn: Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Chunky 2 skeins exactly
Needles: US 10′s through out.

LOVE this green. Of course you probably already know that because I tend to knit this color every month in some form or another.  I love this hat too it’s really stretchy but hugs tight & covers my ears perfectly. I love the cables and I love the Pom :)

I’m not sure if I will write up this pattern or not? Maybe?

In other news the Mr & I finally used our gift membership to Costco this weekend. We walked away with 2 months worth of meat, and enough fruit that I won’t have to hit up the store this week at all! :) I have a love hate relationship with Costco, I love loading up on groceries, but I hate the people. The people! Who the hell goes to Costco to buy 3 freaking things they could have bought from Ralphs more easily & for the same price? And

OMFG the sample people.  I don’t eat the samples of whatever they have at costco (basically I’m not willing to ingest 300+ calories in food I don’t really want or like) but good god, don’t stand next to their little carts because you will get run over when their timer goes off & they start putting out free food.  I was almost knocked to the ground for a Fiber 1 bar. Seriously? If you are going to maul me, at least have it be over something good.

This is why you go to costo, 4lbs of kiwis for 7 bucks.

Also, the most wonderful news hit my inbox Friday.  My cousin Rebecca is coming to California next month for business, but she’s staying through the weekend and is staying with us!!! Seriously, I’m ridiculously over joyed. This woman is the thing I miss about Ohio the most.  I haven’t seen her in two years (which feels like forever) and really miss it.  She’s one of the few people in my family that I really have formed a bond with and feel exceptionally lucky that this extraordinarily cool (yes, she is just fucking NY cool) took me under her wing when I was a teenager.  I used to visit her when she lived in NY when I was a teenager and though there was an age difference of 15 years she never treated me like it. She is the one that first introduced me to sushi (love) and curry (not so much love), who let me once wander her neighborhood in Brooklyn by myself (my mom would have keeled over and died on the spot if she had heard that news) and took me to all the coolest places in order to find shoes, even bawling out a sales woman who gave me shit for my size 10′s (which are now size 12′s).

Sometimes you just have to look around and think “You know what? Life fucking rocks” cause it is right now. I don’t have any huge specific events that make it rock, but I’m just exceptionally happy lately. Maybe that has to do with pouring my brain out into my computer every day writing a novel, maybe it has to do with the fact that California is in a huge cold spell right now and I finally feel comfortable.  Who knows, but right now? It’s happy time.

Special Ed & Bob the Mouthbreather

Special Ed & Bob the Mouthbreather

It’s been brought to my attention that I have been remiss in my regular posting. I have been writing, just not here, so in order to appease my emailers here’s a completely random non-thought out blog post, complete with random pictures.

First off, I’ve hit 27000 some odd words for the month of January so far. Kind of crazy, considering I am a person who had incredible trouble writing a short story in high school and college.

Also, the Mr came home last weekend with Rock Band 2, the complete set. This made for the most unproductive weekend on the face of the earth. He’s gotten pretty good at the guitar though, and I’m singing along (the horror I know) to the songs on hard & getting a 98% efficacy rating, who knew I could carry a tune. I blame all those years of violin lessons & orchestra. I can definitely hear it, but who knew I could reproduce it.

I came home the other day from work and was asulted by the sweetest smelling flowers on the face of the earth. Since we do not have potent flowers in our yard I went to investigate. I found that the roses were in bloom (again) but that’s not where it was coming from.

So I walked around my back yard sniffing this way and that (Yes, I’m sure I looked like a complete lunatic, but for those of you who know me personally you know I couldn’t care less) and finally found what was producing this amazing sweet smell.

Orange Blossom

Orange Blossom

My orange trees bloomed. And they smell amazing!  There were even ripe oranges (though they are, um, mini).

Mini Orange!

Mini Orange!

Of course for every orange that turns out perfectly there is it’s lesser red neck cousin lower on the tree who wasn’t as fortunate.

And yes, I may have only taken a picture of this orange because it reminded me of a butt, yes I am juvinile, what of it?

In other news Bob the cat has taken up water scrying.  He will sit at this bowl for hours just staring into it.   I bet you feel pretty inferior right now as you realize that you yourself do not posses a future seeing cat, but rest assured, it’s worth nothing because his grasp of the English language sucks.

I sees your future

"I sees your future"

This weekend I’m going to finish at least one damn knit. And Monday I will show you something more in line with the knit aspect of this blog.  I need to get my butt in gear because I really want to knit Sylvi (non ravelry users can see it here)  for my Minnesota trip (I would make mine shorter as bigger girls like me have no reason to be in a long sweater coat and minus the hood). I also think that I’m going to try to whip this out pre-trip too, but that might be pushing it.  First off I have to finish the Mr’s sweater which hopefully I can do this weekend! :)

And just in case you think my knitting chart obsession only revolves around humping reindeer I bring you humping elephants.

This is obviously the property of the creator and not me. It is a free chart but I in no way represent this as my own. :) Here is the ravelry link.

Filler: It’s a good thing!

I seem to have a terrible case of starteritus.  I have roughly  6 projects on needles right now all about 1/2 done. Hopefully I will be able to make some kind of push this week or this weekend and get at least one done.  If you are wondering at my lack of any FO’s (which is totally not in my nature) I can give a small glimpse of what I have been spending my free time on.

I still feel a little bit silly about this writing process when I think about it, or have to tell people about it, but it’s getting better.  I’m really enjoying myself and I got a great response out of the Mr last night for some of my new pages.  I have found that one character I really liked in the beginning is actually getting on my last nerve and the opposition of my main characters actually make me a little queasy because after I re-read what I wrote I realize how creepy & fantastically evil they are. Sometimes I don’t know how this all is coming out of my own brain, but it is, and as surprising as that may be it’s also quite energizing. :)

So though I may not be very entertaining now I do have some projects to show off soon.  Projects with cables, cables & …. more cables. :)

UFO Sightings.

This last week has been busy for me, I didn’t feel like posting with out pictures so here’s a whole lot of information with a *few* pictures.

1. I’m teaching a class on how to use Ravelry  at Anacapa Fine YarnsJan 15th, which is this Thursday. There will be a manual provided so you can take it home and get your butt on Ravelry already. This class is free and open to all.

NEXT!

2. I’m heading to Minnesota March 26-30th. Mostly to visit my family, but I will be free for a lunch or two, and I’m trying to remember if I know of any Minnesota based knitters or flickr users. If so email me! We’ll have a meet up, dork style.

NEXT!

3.  I’ve developed a severe case of hybrid road rage. Seriously, if your little hybrid prius, civic or toyotta can’t go above 40 mph, get your ass out of the fast lane. Especially on the 101 going through LA. You people make me conteplate getting a gun and I’m really not that voilent of a person.

NEXT!

4.  I played rock band for the first time this last weekend at Will’s house and it freaking rocked.

NEXT!

5. I’ve been knitting. It feels like I haven’t completed anything in forever. But I’m close on two (three? four?) fronts. So here are some UFO sightings.

The sleeve to the Mrs newest sweater. He picked out the cable & Im really enjoying it.

The sleeve to the Mr's newest sweater. He picked out the cable & I'm really enjoying it.

I would love to say that I’m done with this sleeve, but I got worried about the width, and seemed it up, then I realized if it fit me perfectly, it would not, most likely, fit the husband. I’m now 1/2 way through the new sleeve that is cannibalizing off this.  This time though I’ve added two cables next to the seem stitches and it is going to freaking rock.

Cabled Scarf in Lambs Pride

Cabled Scarf in Lambs Pride

This scarf is nearing 1/2 done. It’s an easy cable once you get started and pretty easily memorized, I love how complicated it looks. This cable is from the Vogue Stitchinary Vol. 2.

Is there anything that Lambs Pride isn’t good for? Seriously (and I know some people don’t like the mohair addition, but I love the fuzz) I think it probably could protect us from nuclear fall out.  It’s breathable, incredibly warm and the mohair collects rain drops & fog condensation with out getting you wet. Pretty damn impressive I would say.

NEXT!

6. My cousin shamed me into getting on facebook, now all I do is look up those popular people who were terrible to me for 8 years of Jr & High School and smile that they are loosers. Sucks to peek in high school, where do you have to go from there?

NEXT!

7. I would probably be going to hell for that last one, but I’m a Unitarian and snark is in our nature!

NEXT!

8. Cat pictures, because I am that woman:

hes cute and fluffy, but usually pretty slashy!

SUE: he's cute and fluffy, but usually pretty slashy!

Bob couldnt look pretty if his life depended on it. The most I can hope for is Slack Jawed Yokle as hes a mouth breather.

Lets Get This Party Started

So this is 2009, and what have you done with it so far? Yes, it’s only a few days and many of us are probably already pushing off our new years resolutions, but some of are doing them in force.  I’ve been writing quite a bit the last few days, fleshing out my story and getting a good a good feel for my characters.  I have set up the lap top on the coffee table and have found it quite nice to sit on the couch and write.  The Mr has been an amazing help. Every day I bring him a few new pages for him to proof and pick his brain. Only my dad has read more fantasy (and honestly, just plane books) than the Mr. Dad, trust me I’m shooting an email your way for critiques too.

Speaking of books? I picked up and finished Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia this weekend.  My dad had sent this book to the Mr for his birthday this last August and though the Mr has read it roughly four (maybe five?) times already I had never really thought about it. The Mr reads the same book about five times each before it hits the shelf. Every flat surface in our house has at least one book on it as he usually reads five at a time (don’t ask me how either cause I can’t even read with the TV on).

So yeah, honestly people? This book freaking rules. I usually don’t review books and honestly don’t always recommend books cause if I recommend Terry Prachett I usually get back “OMG Have you read The Secret” and my brain instantly turns to mush so this is a big deal.  I think the whole thing is brilliant and pretty damn funny, probably one of the reasons that I like it so much is the main character could probably be the Mr’s twin (except for the gun & violence thing). So yeah, I heard that they are doing a second printing of this the summer of 2009 I would definitely recommend you going and ordering a copy.

So yes, in other news? I am baking bread. I may have found my new addiction for the year of 2009. As knitting was my (and lets face it, IS) current addiction of 2008 I’m adding another skill to my giant bag o tricks. 5 minute artisan bread is awesome. My dad bought me this book for my birthday and this is honestly the first time I have tried baking bread out if it (yeah I know, I’m lame). It was seriously easy and the result is fucking awesome. So I want to know, if there are really only 4 ingredients in basic white bread, how come there are 20 listed on the bag you buy from the store? Something to think about.

I made bread & it was fucking tastey

I made bread & it was fucking tastey

In other news I still think this year is going to rock, I just have the all around feeling that this is the year that is going to make up for the last two.  My SIL is finally getting some sort of divine intervention with her condo of doom and will soon be free from the continuing advance of the army of black mould, and honestly, if that’s the only good thing that happens this year, well I say “Fuck Yeah” for it.
