Pom! Hat free pattern

Pom! Hat free pattern. (Ravel it!)

Pom! is a hat knit in chunky weight yarn with small cables.  This hat is great for the beginner to learn cables or the master cabler wanting just a little quick something to knit.  This hat hugs your head comfortably without being too tight and has a nice rounded crown created by quick decreasing so that no one needs fear the conehead shape.

Pom! is named for the fun pom pom topping off the hat, of course no pom is needed for those more conservative types, but I think it adds a little whimsy.

Supplies:
Yarn: Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Chunky 2 Skeins
(Or any chunky weight yarn of your choosing 164-200 yds)
Needles: US size 10 DPN’s or 16″ circular (though you will need the dpn’s for decreasing)
Notions: Stitch Marker, tapestry needle, optional cable needle

Abbreviations:

LT: Left Twist.  Slip 1 knit stitch to cable needle and hold to front, knit next stitch then knit stitch from cable needle.
(This can be done with out a cable needle by just holding the slipped stitch with your thumb against the needle. It sounds more complicated than it is. Here is an example of cabling with out a cable needle. it will save you time.)

Pattern:

CO 80 stitches
Place stitch marker and join in round and work K2, P2 all the way around.
Work 4 more rounds (you will now have 5 rounds of K2, P2 ribbing)

Row 1: *LT, P2 continue from *
Row 2: *K2, P2 continue from *

Repeat these two rows until hat measures 7 inches long, or as long as you need your hat. Remember, the decrease rows are short and will not add more than a 1/2″ onto the length of the hat itself.

Decrease Rows:
Row 1: *LT, P2, K2tog, P2; Repeat from *
Row 2:  *K2, P2, K1, P2; Repeat from *
Row 3: *LT, P2tog, K1, P2tog; Repeat from *
Row 4: *K2, P1, K1, P1; Repeat from *
Row 5: *LT, P2tog, P1; Repeat from *
Row 6: * K2tog, P2; Repeat from *
Row 7: *K1, P2tog; Repeat from *
Row 8: *K1, P1; Repeat from *
Row 9: *K2tog; Repeat from *

Break yarn leaving approximately 10″ tail. Will tail thread through a tapestry needle and draw through remaining stitches and cinch closed.  Secure tail into wrong side of hat and weave in all ends.

If you wish to adorn your hat with a pom pom instructions can be found here.

  1. PS: I love that the pattern title actually contains an exclamation point. I’ve been accused of an excessive love of them, resulting in an excessive use of them. Too cute.
