Last week was a difficult week for me and I didn’t really feel like writing. I thank those of you that asked what was up with my last post, but I’m really not going to elaborate because it’s not something I feel comfortable discussing openly in a public forum (which directly translates into “It may or may not be work related”). So thank you for your concern, I’m ok, seriously. I just had my principles tested.

I am a Unitarian Universalist and I try very hard to practice “The inherent Worth and Dignity of Every Person” so even if I don’t like you or don’t agree with you I still think that you should be treated with respect, kindness, and dignity.  This was tested  pretty rigorously last week reaffirming my belief that if you are not here making the world a better place you have no place in the world.

Enough of that rant. I did what my moral compass compelled me to do and now feel much more rational about the whole thing.

In other news I have UFOs :) Knitting has been going slowly for some reason. I feel as though my endless pararde of finished knits from last year stalled out somewhere this year. Maybe it’s because I’m more picky about what I knit or maybe it’s because I’m just trying to use the stash.  Either way it’s a little bit slower in the final production.

February Baby Sweater

February Baby sweater in cotton fleece for my niece Amelia :) For some reason I put off knitting this sweater though I can’t remember why. Maybe it was the incredible growth spurts my niece is prone to (you may say this is normal, but man, the girl is TALL) or that every time I think about this knit it’s summer in Arizona where she lives.

Either way, I found out that my BIL, SIL & niece are coming for a visit early next month and I thought that it was a great time to knit it. Not only would the weather be perfect, (warm days but the nights are still cool) but I would be able to get some modeled shots.  I made the sleeves 3/4 length so that mom wouldn’t have to roll them up & I made it out of a sturdy but light cotton. So at least it will get one springs worth of wear. I just need to sew the sleeves, wash, block & find a toggle for the front :)

I also finished my first cornrow sock last week at knitting.

Cornrow sock.

Cornrow sock.

This isn’t a great picture and I don’t really like socks with out feet in them, but I don’t have two socks to model so there you go.  (also, I love my moose sock blockers) I decided to continue the pattern down the heel flap because the sturdiness and flatness of the stitch pattern really lendt itself well to it. Hopefully by the end of the week I will have two finished socks and a free pattern for ya all.

I probably didn’t mention but two weekends past the Mr and I snagged some fish out of my MIL’s pond for our own pond. How many grown adults does it take to herd gold fish into a net? At least 3, and only if one is on her knees with her arm in the water up to her elbow. :)

Not sated with the 5 beautiful fish we managed to snag from them the Mr wanted a Koi. So we stopped by petco and picked up a just delivered bag of koi. Two butterfly koi which I am really totally in love with.

Koi for our pond

Koi for our pond

One is a fantastic mind blowing yellow and the other a lighter orange/gold than the comets we have in the pond already. Everyone seems to have settled in quite well and Mr Mellow Yellow there is apparently king of the fish as they all follow him around and won’t make a move with out him which I find funny.

We also had a small skirmish at the house this weekend. All was peaceful as it should be till the great Bob-zilla, unhappy with his complete rule over the lands of Floor, Couch, and Bed decided to attack the good hearted lego people of Dining Room Table.

It was a brutal battle, every man that could carry a weapon turned out to defend the walls. There were indeed times when it looked quite grim as the beast seemed impervious to arrows and spears.

A sneak attack from the back of the castle was tried gaining the great Bob-zilla access to the castles rear courtyard, but trusty knights were quick to flock to the dangers.

In the end a truce was proposed by the King of all Legomen & Dining Room Table.

The truce was accepted by Bob-zilla because after all, it was close to naptime.

The Right Thing

Standing up for those weaker in spirit than you is not only the right thing to do, it’s the only thing to do.

The world falls to chaos and despair when bullies are allowed to prevail.

Knit + Spin + Cats

I think I may have found my knitting mojo. Who knew it was hiding in an old torn up knitting magazine with out of date terminology?!  Anyway, I started a sock  friday night and by yesterday I had finished the heal flap and was ready to start turning the heel.

Nameless Sock Design

Nameless Sock Design

I’m really loving the texture of the pattern so far. It’s a really easy two row repeat but its creating such a fabulous almost ribbing effect. Though people, there is no purling except for the cuff (and when the heel flap is worked flat) so that is a plus in most peoples books I know.

Heres a detail of the st

I’m using Malabrigo Sock in colorway Turner and I think that this design really breaks up any inclination the yarn may have to pool. I’m really quite happy with it so far.

I have also been spinning.

Sunshiny Yellow Merino

Sunshiny Yellow Merino

This is the beautiful sunshiny yellow merino I bought in Minnesota from that amazing shop The Fiber Studio. Seriously, I love that shop and miss it. I wish it was right next to Anacapa Fine Yarns so I could have the worlds most well stocked knit shop & the best fiber shop ever :)

I broke out the high speed flyer for the first time the other weekend.  It took a little bit to get used to it, but I think I’m on the right path. I have a weird beginners spinning issue with not putting enough twist into the single & then trying to over ply the yarn.

Poor Bob is once again humiliated on the interweb

Poor Bob is once again humiliated on the interweb

Bob suffers from this kind of attention more than our other cats because he rarely ever gets fed up and leaves.  If the Mr does it then whatever “it” is must be ok with the Bob.

Popcorn toes

Popcorn toes

Funny enough, Bob hates people food. He has no interest at all in it, though Special Ed loves cheese in all forms (especially fake cheese on Mac & Cheese, he will suck it right off the noodle) and A Boy Named Sue loves (and I mean loves)  sourdough bread.

Matthias Sweater

The Matthias Sweater is now available for purchase.

Ravel It!

Mattias is a universally classic sweater design sprinkled lightly with unexpected details.  The sweater is knit flat in pieces with cables at almost every seam edge so that when the sweater is sewn together cables meet and offer a lovely detail.  A cabled collar really adds something different pulling all the different elements together and finishing off this unique design.

The sweater classic enough that every man would find himself comfortable in it, but interesting enough that the knitter will enjoy it’s construction.

Just enough pattern with out getting too “fussy” as my husband would say.

Seaming details add a an extra unexpected pop

Remember This?

Remember when I knit this (non ravelry link here) and I said that I would have that pattern out asap? Well. I lied, I procrasinated forever. Then I got a little sad when I saw the same elements I thought were “so aswesome & new” used in two other sweaters. So I sat on it.

But now it’s done.  The sweater’s name is Matthais and will be ready for sale at the end of the week. A full blog post is coming on the matter. This is just an update.

Anniversary of a Different Sort

(Quick FYI to the blog contest winners, your packages went out yesterday but I forgot to take a picture of them so you will now be completely surprised).

As the title says, today is an anniversary of a different sort for me.  Today is officially two weeks since I had my last cigarette.   Yup, I quit smoking.  I didn’t really intend to, (though I knew full well I should have done this years ago) I actually just got really sick and couldn’t even cope with the idea of further hurting my barely gasping lungs.  So I went one day with out, then two, then three, and as I got better I wanted to smoke again, but I resisted.  And then it was a week and now two.

I won’t lie. I miss it, I crave it and if it wasn’t so harmful I would still be doing it.  But I’m not, my will power is stronger than the want.  I wonder if it will ever go away, if I will ever not want to smoke?

The Mr is now on the band wagon. We have been a completely smoke free zone for a couple of days and I will admit they have been a rough couple of days.  Where I was lucky enough to ride out my nicotine fits in a drug induced stupor he was not.  There were a few times things became more irritating than they should have been.

Then yesterday we found out that we owe big time on our taxes.  We owe 4x as much as we’ve ever owed. And yes, we have double checked (multiple times).   It seems that claiming “0″ means squat, that even though they take the most allowable out of my paycheck each week it’s still not enough, which I don’t quite fully understand.

So maybe this year we will be buying some 100% tax deductible alpacas and boarding them up at Mette’s ranch. (I joke, maybe).

It’s a little painful to watch those that pay less in taxes than us get more back, but there’s really nothing to be done.  I guess the only ones that we can blame are ourselves, if we didn’t make the amounts we do none of this would happen.  So I’m sure there are better things to complain about, but this one has really pushed a button.

Winners and Spinners

The results are in. I used a random number generator 4 times to come up with 4 different commenter’s and prize winners. They are, in no particular order…

Katinka
Alli from Knitasaurus
Amy from the Threadpanda

Alana from Nevernotknitting
(Woah! So many “A” names!)

Alright gals, I will be emailing you shortly for addresses & such. I will be posting pictures here Monday of the packages if you would like a sneak peek at your prize ;)

In other news I think I’ve kinda lost my knitting mojo. I’m not sure why, I just can’t really concentrate on any project or find something that really inspires me to knit.  This might be because I am finally feeling well after being sick as a dog so I’m not too worried about it.  I have been reading up a storm and also spinning some.

Electric Blue Wenselydale

Electric Blue Wenselydale

I won’t even bother to tell you that the color isn’t quite right here. Is it ever really right? This yarn is actually much darker and at the same time brighter in color.

I didn’t pay attention to the label when I pulled this roving out to spin. I just got myself settled and away I went. I thoughtI was spinning merino but the entire time I kept thinking “Man, this is hairy merino! It’s to soft to be coridale, not fuzzy enough for fin sheep, not silky enough for BFL, nothing like romney, definitely not Shetland.” This could have all been solved in the beginning if I would have read the beautiful little label stating that this was indeed Wenselydale.

I have never spun Wenselydale before which is why I couldn’t recognize it at all. The texture is a cross between Fin Sheep and BFL. It’s a little course but with a silky finish. As you can also see, it’s a little bit hairy but I honestly haven’t washed it yet so that might go away.

I bought 8 ounces of this a few months back and still have the last 4 to spin. I can’t tell you how much I love this deep saturated color. There’s just enough variegation so that it’s not just blue, but not to much where it gets muddy. I’m not a fan of variegated yarns, I appreciate their beauty but I usually don’t buy them. This though, is perfect.

The roving is from Lisa Souza and all her colors are just beautiful. The shipping was really super fast and the product is to dye for (ha! Dye get it?).  I really recommend her fibers and will become a repeat customer for sure!

Happy Blogversary to Me.

I will revele the winners friday. So comment to enter :)

In other news I am finally getting over the plague I caught while in Minnesota, unfortunately I managed to infect the Mr.  Since I was able to recognize it almost immediately he’s been on a drug & vitimin C regiment since friday and is doing much better than I was with the virus.

This weekend Mette invited us up to the ranch for a BBQ at their ranch. When they got there they were just finishing up cleaning up some new born lambs. I couldn’t believe how amazingly cute they were!  They looked like mini black poodles & were so tiny!  Mette and her husband Tom have a small herd of Icelandic sheep among the various other critters.

Lambs!

Lambs!

May 30th the Mr and I are heading back up to Lompoc to watch (and maybe even help) while Mette & Tom shear all the animals. I can’t wait.  Their Icelandic wool is the most amazingly soft & refined lopi I’ve ever felt. The yarns that they produce on the ranch are amazing, the softest alapcas, llamas, and wool ever. All the colors are natural but they are the best of the best for sure.

And you can’t forget the boys.

Ranch of the Oaks doesn’t only just have sheep, they have alpacas & Llamas too! This llama was the most friendly critter ever. She actually wanted to be pet which, from what I was told, is not really in their nature.

There were also dogs, cats & orstiches. I have to tell you, I have a strange afinity for rough looking farm dogs. I love how weathered they look.  Hank was no exception!

And this pup I actually wanted to steal. Mette seems to have quite a lot of dogs with the bi-color eye thing going on. I’ve never seen it before. Hank (above) is blind in one eye, but the pup below isn’t blind at all. Just blue & brown eyes.

I will steal this pup some day!

I also managed to get some spinning & knitting done this weekend. I am working slowly on my forecast sweater (which they should rename the sweater of PURLING because there is very little knitting involved!) in some knit picks stashed yarn (trying to use the stash).

Minnesota Recap

I am back from Minnesota and slowly gaining ground against the plague I’ve been infected with.  Though I’ve thought with consistency about writing this this blog I’ve actually been conflicted as to what to say.  See, the trip that I was so excited to take turned out to be a trip much different than I expected.  I’m sure a lot of it has to do with becoming more and more ill as the trip went on, but there were a few things that had nothing to do with health (at least physical health).

There were two realizations that I made while traveling alone. One; I do not do well with out the Mr, it’s not a co-dependent teenage thing, it’s that he’s my best friend, my better half, and everything I find good in this world. With out him for one day, I can do, the proceeding days became worse and worse as I was less able to cope with the harshness of some situations.  See, he balances me out, makes me neither to accommodating nor too mean, with out him my scale tips wildly from side to side.   Two; living so long with the Mr’s family I have had my armor slowly chipped away with out even knowing it.  My tough hide has been softened by those that would never choose to throw out a snide hurtful remark.  I have become complacent in the company of those that use no guilt or shame in their daily lives.  So unused to ducking these barbs I fear I left myself wide open quite a few times, and though just six years ago these verbal missiles would have just bounced off with out a second thought, they now sunk deep and I find myself still probing the mental wounds, currious as to why they hurt so much.

Because of my ill health during this trip I did approximately 1/2 of what I set out to do.  Though I find this a little upsetting, nothing more could have been done.  I was just not strong enough to cope.  I did manage to visit quite  a few yarn shops though dragging my dad through all of them.  I will not write reviews of the shops as quite a few of them were incredibly disappointing (either in their staff or just basic selection) but I will list the two that I found quite exciting.

Bella Lana in Minneapolis is a beautiful little boutique shop where the shelves are delicately and deliberately arranged with one skien per color of each yarn on stark white shelves. The effect is quite beautiful and inspiring as you are not overwhelmed by the amount of yarn.  Also, upon entering the shop you are greeted with the most adorable Italian Greyhound ever named Enzo.  That alone is worth the visit.

The second was a complete surprise to me. The Fiber Studio (also in Minneapolis) does not sell yarn. They sell only fiber! Not only were the people in this shop some of the most friendly of the day the shop was just amazing. A small space crammed with all sorts of lovely fibers and colors. It was definitely the highlight of my day!

Despite my earlier yarn shop disappointments I did come away with quite a few things :)

The Haul (the Octopus Needle Holder is probably my favorite thing ever!)

The Haul (the Octopus Needle Holder is probably my favorite thing ever!)

I still have many more pictures to upload but at least that’s a start as I was starting to get the “so how was it?” emails ;) All in all the trip was ok. I will not be making it again with out the Mr though as I am now unable to deffend myself against ludicrousness remarks.

A small sample of pictures to come later.
