Smudge Pullover

I was running a little dry on knitting inspiration a couple of weeks ago and realized it was most likely because I hadn’t knit one single selfish thing in months.  So dropping everything I was doing I dove into my stash head first and came up with a lovely cone of white alpaca lopi.  Normally white wouldn’t be my color, I mean I am a MAGNET for stains and not in the good Tide Detergent kind of way either.  Wearing white usually doesn’t come into my wardrobe ever because I just can’t keep it clean.  But with this beautiful lopi that my friend Mette spun up at their mini mill at Ranch of the Oaks I just couldn’t mess with perfection.  Mette’s lopi is something truly stunning and though she’s really humble about it I don’t think that there is a commercially available equal.  (She will be a Stitches West if you want to check it out personally!).

Ahem, so I had around 1800 yards of alpaca and a schematic for a top down sweater which I admit isn’t my favorite sweater on my body.  Something about the long shoulder lines and droopy arms just don’t work for me usually, but this time I decided I was going to make a droopy baggy sweater that I could wear around the house and knit in or do errands in.  My usual point of contention in whether I will wear a sweater a lot comes down to how long it is at the waist and how baggy the cuffs are.  If I can’t knit in the sweater with out the cuffs getting in the way I won’t wear it, and if the sweater isn’t long enough it will be discarded forever.  Some how finding the right length on a top down sweater is harder for me because when I bind off it always seems like I’ve mysteriously lost an inch.  I’m blaming this fate and moving on because it doesn’t happen if I do a bottom up sweater.

Instead of having just a plain white sweater that would easily blend in with the background I dug out a skein of my husband’s handspun to and a little striping detail.  The handspun itself is actually a bulky weight alpaca blend but I like the nubbliness and homespun feel this adds.  It’s not just a stripe, it’s character!

This sweater was just for me so there won’t be a pattern with it.  I knit the collar at a long slow deep “V” and then after I put the arms on stitch holders I cast on equal amounts of stitches on both sides of the sweater to create the little straight shelf you see.  I wanted a slouchy foldable professors collar on this sweater and I’m super pleased with the results!  What I really did was only increase on the collar every 4th row which gave it the perfect angle for this wide ribbed collar.

On the note of the collar since I didn’t really know how to achieve this look at first and had to do some ravelry research through pictures (lots of pictures!) to find something that matched what I was trying to achieve, since you can see that it is just a standard 2×2 ribbed collar with no decreases I actually had to THINK before knitting this.  Basically what I ended up doing was knitting all the stitches around the neck and collar with out decrease for like 7″ leaving the bottom free where it would eventually meet the body of the sweater.  Then I stitched one side of the collar in front of the other, and POOF DA DOOF it looked fantastic.   Is there a book out there for collar shaping & techniques?  There should be.  I think it’s the most under appreciated part of knitting a sweater.  Everyone is so rushed to finish that they forget there are amazing wonderful ways besides ribbing, hemming, and garter stitch to finish off that oh so important crowning glory to your handknit sweater.

The stripes as you can see aren’t just knitted. They are alternated between knitting and purling because I like the little dashed line effect you get when you purl on the right side of a colorwork garment. I think it also added some nice detailing to the overall texture.  The last thing I tackled on this sweater was the cuffs.  I don’t like baggy sloppy cuffs.  Well, in theory I do because they are cute and look comfy and who needs mittens when you have those kinds of cuffs? BUT, and this is major, they do not work at all for me.  If I can’t write, type, or knit with out pushing up a cuff the sweater rarely will get worn.  So on this sweater to incorporate the baggy sleeves along with fitted cuffs I knit with out decrease on the arms till mid-forearm.  Then I decreased drastically, (About 1/2 the stitches) and continued on in 2×2 ribbing till the sleeve was long enough.  I didn’t know how I would like this but it worked out perfectly.  I don’t ever have to worry about dragging my sleeve through something gross at a restaurant or getting that sloppy look.  The cuffs are fitted but not tight and totally comfy and wearable.

This may not be everyone’s ideal sweater but I’m pleased as punch with the outcome and am ready to get back to some designs I’ve been working on.

Girl Friday Cardigan

Ok, I have to admit that I shouldn’t have really cast this on because I have so many other things I should be completing.  Like, sweaters for the Mr & Carol, scarves, Christmas & birthday knits and…oh yeah…packing this darn house! So I’m not sure how this got on the needles but I blame Mette & her fabulous yarn.

Pattern: Girl Friday free from Knitty
Yarn: Zoo Blend by Ranch Of The Oaks
Verdict? LOVE!!! I was going for a slouchy English cardigan.  You know the ones that are always shown in the movies looking oh so cute & oh so comfy. Well I think I achieved it.  It’s fitted enough in the right places but big enough that I can lounge. I love it!

The lace pattern was so easy that I used practically no brain power to knit it.  I am really pleased that I used a lace pattern for this yarn or else I fear it would have been one HEAVY sweater.  Which is fine because I’m moving to Washington State but I wanted something more versatile.

This was a seriously easy pattern to follow.  The shaping is minimal & the collar is delish! I would totally recommend everyone take a new look at this sweater.

It’s Starting To Look A Lot Like….

It’s mid-July, I have knitting ADD and all I have on my mind at the moment is…CHRISTMAS. I know, it’s too early to break out the baby in a manger but when you craft you have to get all your projects in order ahead of time or you might just loose your mind.  First you must figure out who in your family and friends deserves a handknit.  Don’t make the mistake of thinkign everyone will love your woolies because they will not, and it will make you sad when you see their baby eating the hand knit cashmere and sea silk handmaiden lace scarf you worked on for two months.  Remember, keep it simple.  I keep a simple rule in mind, if I would not donate a kidney to you chances are I won’t knit for you.

going along with my knitting ADD I have cast on yet another project.  A project I desperately did not need to put on the needles but one that decided to pop up because I made a splurge of a purchase on some fabulous yarn from Ranch Of The Oaks.  This is their “Zoo Blend” which is a mix of all animals that get processed through the mill.  Every run is different, some are more wool, some are more alpaca, llama, mohair, or what not.

Girl Friday Cardigan (Free on Knitty)

I believe this is mostly a mix of alpaca and wool. It SMELLS like the barn yard but I honestly love it (and so does Tank who keeps licking my sweater when I’m not looking).  I’m glad that I decided to knit this in a lace because I think that it might have been too heavy in any thing else.

I’m also almost done on my Goodale Cardigan but I have doubts. Serious doubts that make me sad.  1. This seems to be shorter than I would ever wear a cardigan. 2. it seems too big.  I am almost done & will block & pin it into place.  If it is ot what I hope when the pockets are pinned then I will have to give it up as “a skinny girls sweater”.   Either way, the silky wool is quite fab & I want to knit a sweater for the Mr out of it some day.

Speaking of the Mr, he is such a wonderful man and a quiet enabler.  He brought me back these two cones of yarn.  It’s from a place called Yarnia up in the great pacific northwest and it’s like Build A Bear for Yarn!!! How genius is that? Brilliant I say, Brilliant!

So now I’m on to knittin’ Christmas. I have two sheep worth of sweaters to spin and knit (our sheep were sheared & the fleece processed) before christmas hopefully, hats, gloves, mittens, socks, and scarves.  Wish me luck, I might need to be medicated.

Happy 2010

It’s the new year & we are up and running here at chez poopers.  The Mr and I spent the weekend at Ranch Of The Oaks with our good friends Mette, Tom, Jim & Carol.  In short it was AWESOME.

First, Jim made so much chilli that we could have exported it to end world hunger, but then again we would have initated the burning off of the rest of the ozone layer with that much methane…course, it could be the new “green” energy (why is it that everything “green” stinks?). Anywho, chilli was awesome.  After that we bribed, begged, pleaded, cried, and finally forced everyone to play Rock Band.

They played & they liked it

After the first few songs everyone was diggin it.  We even found someone who can actually sing Bob Dillian REALLY well! Even with a terrible sinus headache he rocked it out.  Tom really kicked major butt on the drums & the ladies all sang & played guitar. It was awesome.

We had our own little KAL for the incognito cowl which was fun!

I have been knitting a lot lately.

Zag Hat, pattern coming soon!

And Crocheting too.

Cloudy Day Cowl

We also have a new member of our family.

He doesn’t have a propper name so until then he’s Poopers Jr.

He’s a sweet fabulous 8 month old great dane mix that we already love more than anything.

And on the subject of dogs…

Well, back to puppy proofing the house. Expect more pictures soon!

Quick update!

I’ve been missing though I haven’t gone anywhere really. It’s hard to fine the energy to blog and I’ll blame it on the holiday season (though really I haven’t done squat for the holiday season).what have I been up to?

Well the Mr and I went to visit our good friends Jim & Carol up in Oak Glen.  They have a fabulous pack of dogs, alpacas, an emu named Larry, and wild peacocks.

It rained like mad all weekend but I really had a wonderful time chatting and playing with animals.

Then the weekend after that we went up to Ranch Of the Oaks to hang out.  The ewes are in with their respective rams and everyone seems well except for our one sheep who want’s nothing to do with the boy she’s in with.  She was so eager to get away from him that she actually broke through a fence. Hopefully that means she’s already bred but if not it’s ok too.

I’ve been crocheting a lot more recently and feel pretty comfortable with it now.

I have a pattern or two in the works that need to be written up and I’m crocheting my first improv toy. :) It may or may not be (it is) a dragon.

Merry Christmas! And just to show you a little bit of our tree…

Why yes that is garlic.

Mood Of Blue

I haven’t really been feeling blue exactly, but to say that everything is fine would be an understatment.  I’m not exactly sure how to explain the disconnected feeling I’ve been experiencing lately.  It’s not that I feel ill but I feel separated.  Oddly enough though I’ve not had the energy or social skills I normally do I’ve been knitting up a storm.

I’ve had a few skeins of sock yarn laying around for a while that I didn’t want to use for socks.  Some yarns are just too darn pretty to go on your feet.

I’m working up patterns right now.  Great little shawls that add the perfect amount of warmth but are light as a feather.

All I’m ha vying troubles with now are finding names for them.

I’ll be posting the shawl pattern for the hand painted shawl later this week.  I’m just about done putting it into pdf format.

This weekend the Mr & I are ranch sitting for Tom  & Mette while they are down in LA for an alpaca show.  I’m really looking forward to the solitude and quiet of the ranch and hanging out with the animals.  Now I just have to figure out if I want to knit, spin, or write while I’m up there.

I’m slowly starting to come back to the real world, soon I’ll be posting regularly again I promise.

Sorry for the radio silence but the last two weeks hurt.  Today was the first day that I felt normal the whole way through the day.  So I’m hoping that means that I’ve turned a corner.  In other news the Mr and I went to the Santa Barbara Zoo with our friends Tom & Mette.  Meaning I took some pictures.

I thought this little bleeding heart dove was beautiful.

I love birds even common ones because of the light play. Black is not black but blue and violet.

I’ve also been spinning some gotland which I have to say is turning out to be one of my favorite spins so far.

It’s a hairy yarn like lopi but oddly silky feeling.

I’ve been knitting lately and have come up with a new design that I am going to be publishing soon.  My first triangle shawl with out being so lacy. I really like it and it’s the perfect size for one skein of sock yarn :)    This weekend the Mr and I will be selling his niddy noddies and Ranch Of The Oaks wares at the Ventura Spinners & Weavers Guild open house.  If you are interested please stop by and I will be better about updating this blog with some knitting and spinning content by the end of the weekend.

Mr Poopers Has A Sheep

So yesterday I mentioned sheep and I received a flood of emails from friends all going “say what?” so here is the post to clarify things.  The Mr and I do have sheep.  Two to be precise.  Two mostly icelandic sheep.

We did not name the sheep and one is definitely getting renamed if not both.

I can tell you that the Mr and I have never really had the thought “I’m going to get a sheep.” much less two but Tom & Mette are enablers and I am a huge fan of lopi.  So when we were offered two icelandic cross breed sheep I ignored it (honestly I did) and the Mr secretly talked to Mette.  I was still on the fence until I saw them and now I love them too.  This year I think it will be fiber, then after that we may talk about breeding (and no we wouldn’t be breading for fiber or to start a flock).

They are really quite beautiful girls and I didn’t think that I would be quite so happy with a sheep.  Especially ones that are afraid of people. (though isn’t that all sheep?) in an attempt to coral them the sheep formally known as “Princess” (the black ewe) jumped over Mette’s shoulder and head butted the fence creating a huge dent in the door.  Sorry Mette! I didn’t know a sheep could jump like that & also I’m sorry that I’m oddly a little proud that my big fat girl could jump like that. :)   Also did you know that Icelandic sheep don’t flock? I didn’t but it seems oddly Scandinavian to me that even the sheep are “Every ewe for themself!” & only the strongest or smartest survive when they don’t flock. :)

My girls are at the front & the far right.  They are so beefy which I think is the cross, even their legs are much thicker than the other sheep on the ranch.

picked up from the same ranch is Lambert, Tom & Mette’s new ram.

He’s beautiful and a beast. I thought their ram Hawk was huge but this guy has at least 40 pounds on him.  And who can resist that pink nose?

So next I will be spinning & knitting from my own darn sheep. How crazy is that?!  (I would also like to state that wordpress does not recognize the word “ewe” which I find is odd)
