Sheep, Socks, And Sandy

Today apparently the letter of the day is “S”.  This last weekend the Mr and his buddy drove down to California and picked up our 7 Icelandic sheep.  I can’t tell you how nice it is to have them up here.  They are going to be able to keep my pastures trimmed neatly and save the Mr some major mowing time.

They have settled in really well.  I don’t think they’ve ever seen so much green grass and they are happily munching what the goats have decided they don’t like.  We are keeping them in a smaller paddock for a few days to acclimate them to the property.  I have their fibers in bags and will be sending it for processing shortly.  I’m thinking about making it all into yarn, thoughts?

Our good friends who own the ranch where we were boarding them had the sheep shorn before they came up which was really nice.  They look a little silly right now but it helped them keep cool on the trip.  I remember them being pretty shy and skiddish (Icelandic sheep are a primitive sheep and don’t  flock and don’t warm up to people like some of the other larger breeds of sheep) but they are much more friendly than I remembered.  They come up for feeding and I think they are starting to learn that since the goats think I’m ok then I must be :)   I don’t ever expect them to follow me around like the goats do and beg for attention but they don’t run away which is nice.

On another random note, this week starting Thursday is Sock Summit!  My good friend Sandy and her husband are coming up.  I’m so excited to see them!  Sandy is originally from Wisconsin and me being from Minnesota we instantly clicked when we met at a knitting group in California.  I’m taking a few classes (a pattern seminar from the editor of Knitty Amy Singer, and a dying seminar with Tina Newton).  I’m really excited (and a little nervous) about this.  I’ve wanted to go since I first started knitting 4 years ago but I couldn’t justify flying and staying in Portland by myself.  This time I live across the river from Portland and can go home and stay in my bed at night.  I don’t know if I’m more excited about the marketplace or the seminars!

Are you going to Sock Summit if so I’d love to meet you!

In knitting related news I’m working on 2 cardigans at the same time.  I’m really happy with both of them so far too.  It’s amazing how fast something knits up when you don’t have to write a pattern for it!

The first is Daffodil with a striped garter stitch yoke.   It’s a fingering weight pattern but I never use the right yarn for the right pattern.  I used silky tweed and did the math for the gauge.  I used purple for the stripes.  Something I normally wouldn’t have.  I like the charcoal but I’m still on the fence about the purple.  It’s not my normal choice but I was trying to go for something other than ochre and acid green.  I wish I would have gone with acid green.  Maybe I’ll do a short sleeved version in my original color choices.  I think I’ll get a lot of wear out of this cardigan though.  It seems very wearable and light enough to wear around the house from fall to spring. The second is Larch but it’s a big grey blob right now. It’s going to be super pretty and wearable but the details were tedious (beautiful, very thoughtful but tedious none the less).

I haven’t written in a week but I’ll get back to it soon.  I’ve hit a point where I know how this is all going to end.  I had to take a step back and write up a battle plan.  I’ve got diagrams with arrows, skirmishes and planned attacks.  I think it would be easier to write a fiction crime novel at this point where you don’t have to put a war onto paper.  Maybe not.  I’m actually excited about finishing this self imposed project because I um, have something else that has been eating my brain.  It’s individually smaller but collectively larger and I’m in love with it.  So yeah.  Mildred is huge and Mildred will eventually need a title that is not “Mildred”.  Maybe when I am done with this I will have a blog contest on “Name My Book” :) Maybe, I don’t know if I’d get enough entries to make it worth while or not.

So yeah.  That’s mostly my life these days.  I have some farming stuff going on, and I’ll be putting up some Tarhgee fiber for sale.  If I were to have some Icelandic spun up what weight would you as a knitter prefere?

Knitting vs Reading vs Writing

I’ll admit.  Writing it starting to win out.  I set myself a goal to have Mildred finished by the end of summer.  That might seem like plenty of time for you all but in reality I’m doubtful of my deadline.  I have no eclipsed 500,000 words.  That’s right, it’s a lot of stinking words.  I’m starting to get those questions, “are you going to publish it?”, “when are you going to be done?”, “can I read it?”.  Well, here are some answers, “I’d love to publish it, but since last time I checked I am not a publisher I don’t know.  When I am done I will do what needs to be done to try and bring this story into the world.  But it will be another long and maybe painful process.  I’m not focusing on it right now because I need to focus on how Mildred is going to end.”

“I have no idea when it will be done.  I write and write and write and feel good and comfortable about what I write though I know I could probably go back and add paragraphs upon paragraphs of description and action to enhance bits.  I will be done when Mildred decides she is done and no sooner.  At least now I know where I am going.  This has been a completely organic process.  I didn’t start out intending to write a story (or now as some family members are calling it “epic).  I wrote five little paragraphs that amused me (and apparently others).  I need to finish this because I am queen of leaving things half done.  It will be done when it is done and hopefully that is by the end of summer.”

“Ug, the “can I read it” question.  See the thing is I’m still embarrassed that I write a blog some days and that people read it.  I didn’t grow up in a showy family, we did what we did very well but we don’t talk about it because “it might give you a big head”.  I struggle against this and the Mr often will frown at me and push me a little outside my comfort zone but for right now I’m still embarrassed by Mildred.  Part of me thinks that I might have written 500,000+ words that are complete crap and that my storyline is predictable and generic that my characters are unlikable and dumb.  These might not be things that are true or at least completely true but that doesn’t mean I won’t worry about looking like a looser.  Sometimes I wish I would have taken an interest in softball or running or mountain biking or rock climbing.  No one ever thinks those people are losers, (although I don’t get why a softball has to be the size of a grapefruit) or laughs at their hobbies.”

So yeah. I’ve been writing a lot.  On any average day I’m putting in about 5,000 words if not more.  I’m still knitting but it’s summer and my knitting always slows down in warmer weather.  I finished my second (and larger) Weave It shawl.  I can’t tell you how much I love this shawl. the colors, the texture, the size, it’s really one of my favorite knits so far.

I changed the increases per Monika’s suggestion and it now looks a million times better. :)   I have finished my final High Desert Shawl also.  I still love this pattern but I think I’m done knitting it for a while :)

I also have knit a swatch.

And sent it off to a certain knit magazine.  Fingers crossed.  Also thank you to everyone who commented on my last post.  I appear to have a fig and a walnut tree in my back pasture.  I will be honest and say that I have never had a real whole fig (I’ve had a fig newton!) but am sure they are lovely.

So most days this is where I can be found.  WRiting while Tank sleeps.  When he is ready to wake up for the day I stop and we go run around but until about 11:30 each day I’m writing furiously trying to finish something I never intended to start.

Beauty for Beauty’s Sake

Moni and I met up for our monthly jaunt into Portland to act like tourists.  Being that I’ve lived outside the city for less than a year and Monica just over we get to do all the things that you never get to cram into a weekend of tourism.  Even more fabulous is that Monica, being an awesome librarian, has access (which I guess anyone has access to in the Portland Library System) to ‘cultural passes’.  These are awesome passes you rent out and get free admission to many of the local cultural spots around Portland.  This Monday we went to see the Japanese Gardens.  Now I’m not a garden person.  I’ll enjoy and marvel at people who can manipulate their yards into green, flowering, sculptural art but mine?  My yard is run by a dog, wayward rabbits, escaping chickens and the occasional wily goat.  My yard is dotted with sunny yellow dandelions, a little overgrown, and like me…imperfect in most every way.  But you can sit out on my patio with a glass of tea or a beer and never feel as if you don’t belong.  My yard will never be too perfect to step on or frown at your dirty shoes and mud stained jeans.  My yard won’t care if you smell like a barn or you haven’t gotten around to washing your hair which is now tied up by a bandana.  This is my yard.  That said, I enjoy beauty.  I savor it like most artists do.  I stop and breathe it, smell it, absorb it into my skin and my subconsciousness in ways that I assume people feel about clothes, shoes, hair, makeup, or pocket sized dogs.  Everything is beautiful is its own way but I particularly love green spaces.  I love to be outside among trees that have dwarfed man for many generations.  I love moss covered ground and hanging lichen and hearing bird calls echo from unseen branches.  I loved the Japanese Gardens more than I thought possible.  Maybe mostly because it was green and unlike a western garden it shunned flowers.

The sheer amount of green was mind-blowing.  Japanese gardens focus on the green instead of the flower.  The aim is to have as many different greens as possible.  It’s stunning.  Adding to the day was that it was, as Portland often is, raining.  Thankfully I have finally gotten on track and bought myself a very Portland worthy Lands End rain coat which makes the rain as beneath my notice as if it were not raining.

You could spend all day every day photographing at the gardens just to capture every light and every moment.  I know I would be bored of this fairly fast because I’m easily distractable, but I do really want to go back.  Maybe in the fall.

We wandered through the garden by ourselves first, photographing as we went.  At 1pm there is a tour and though I don’t do tours Monica and I decided to check it out. See, I’m not a joiner, I’m not really a team player.  I don’t like to be in large undefined groups where rules of civility usually aren’t followed.  This tour though was quite amazing.  Our guide was knowledgeable, entertaining, and fun.  The group was quiet enough but also interactive but not to the point to bore the other members.  Every bit of the gardens has a purpose, a reason for being.  Nothing is done just because.  It is a symbol, a chance to reflect, to meditate, to think.  It all seems very hard but simply easy and beautiful.  Frankly, it’s a whole lot of work to make something so beautifully simple.

I have discovered I need a portable tripod.  This would have turned out a million times better if I had a sturdy tripod rather than trying to steady this on the railing as I slowed my shutter speed way down to try to capture the sense of movement.

I love stairs because I love line and I love vanishing points.  I particularly love these stairs because of the moss threatening to overtake them and their beautiful stone fronts.  They were only a little tricky to get up for someone as unbalanced as me but thankfully they were close to normal stair height.

It was a magical day.  It rained just enough to coat everything in a slick jewel finish.  I think that rain makes just about everything look better and the smell is intoxicating.

In other news (almost knitting/ fiber), one of my newly favorite wordsmiths has written a beautiful short story.  It called to me even more because of the weaving/yarn/ fiber content.  You should go check it out.  It’s super short and beautiful.

Arachne by J.M. McDermott

I’ve been busy…

As a newly formed slave to the crochet I’ve been really busy.  I like it because it’s fast and since I’ve picked small projects it’s really flown by.

These little buggers just need to be starched and hooks to hang on the tree.

And the crochet doesn’t stop there…

I have been knitting the bubble pull over from knitting from nature and while it’s coming along really well it looks like a complete mess.  I’ve almost finished a set of mittens too.

Also I’ve finished my spiral yoked pull over but I’m not really sure how I feel about it.

I wish it was shorter and I tried to make it shorter but it didn’t work out like I planned because it’s still pretty long.

Other than that life is going pretty well. As I’m typing the Mr is putting out the christmas lights and tomorrow I’m having coffee with a pretty cool chick from work.  So yeah & stuff.  More knitting to come and maybe even some writing.  I feel like I’m really getting somewhere with Mildred, well, 300,000 words and still no end in sight.  even if I never get to the publishing stage I’ve freaking written a story that I am pretty proud of and would really want to read.

Stay tuned, more projects and patterns to come ;)

(And omg side note, this is the first time I’ve ever hit the spell check to find that there are absolutely no errors!)

Update with Knitting & SHEEPS

Whew, seriously has it been a week already? I can’t believe it’s friday.  It’s odd because my day at work burns by at light speed which is awesome and unexpected.  I was pulled in to the big bosses office again. This makes it 4 times in 3 weeks (if not the 5th time) to ask me what I think about processes and what’s happening in the department.  It’s weird and humbling because though I have the most experience in the entire department I don’t know that I’m ready to offer an opinion on what people have been doing for the last three years.

I won’t bore you though because I fully admit that bankcard is only interesting to people who are in bankcard.  I could wax on about PCI compliance or dues & assessments or truncation but I won’t because that’s not why you come here.

These days though I’ve been pretty boring & I apologize for that.  Good news for you faithful readers is that I am going to the ranch this weekend for National Alpaca Day (NAD HA!).  Yeah, equally as dorky as comic con or Star Trek I take comfort in the fact that I am still not as dorky as the furries.  (I apologize to all furries I have just offended and I’m sure your not all freaks like those popularized on the internet because I’m a knitter and that doesn’t mean I knit weird creepy toilette paper cozies).

For people who come to Mr Poopers for the pictures here ya go.

Handturned niddy noddie out of yellowheart wood.

Handturned niddy noddie out of yellowheart wood.

I found out yesterday through the Mr’s searching (did I know he read my blog? No I did not so I guess I better stop telling stories about him- yeah right) that there is actually ANOTHER Mr. Poopers out there. :/  Though we share a similar blog name I have to claim that I am the original Mr. Poopers and I will not talk about actual poop (unless it’s animal poop and then I might because it’s funny).  Why “Mr” Poopers? Why not? Enough of your questions! Moving along!

Back to more relevent subjects above is a handturned niddy noddy done out of Yellow Heart which I have mistakenly (and quite randomly) been calling lemon wood. Well, either works if you ask me but the Mr insists I correct myself so I will *sigh*.  It’s YELLOW HEART. And it’s for sale.  If you are in California and come to Ranch Of The Oaks this weekend you can buy it.  If it’s stillhere at the end of the weekend it will be for sale on monday I will post it on the blog and you can buy it through etsy.

Random alert!  the Mr hauling a sheep!

More randomness!

And for those of you that come here for the knitting stuff here ya go…

Liesel Handspun Scarf

Liesel Handspun Scarf

I spun this yarnto make this scarf! Crazypants!  Pattern is Liesel & it was fast, fun and totally worth it. Free, easy, & pretty can you ask for more?

Expect tons of pictures from the weekend, not only is it the ranch where we do all sorts of weird, fascinating, fun, and drunken things, but it’s national alpaca day and Carrie is coming & so is Jim & Kathy (though sadly no Jim & Carol which still makes me pout) and other crazy other people who do weird things like help alpacas have sex :)

I also just remembered that sunday is the 6 year anniversary of our wedding.  6 years since the Mr and I had an 8 minute ceremony that was honestly the best decision of my life.  If you’ve been here long you know how I feel about the Mr.  I love him more than I could ever express.  He’s the flame of my heart and the fuel for my soul, he’s my best friend and my biggest fan.

Also I’ve pumped out another 15,000 words which brings me to a ridiculous amount of words and pages and characters and plot lines.  It also means that Mildred has moved on to the third person reading the rough draft and the second part of the “book” is being circulated as I type.  So we will see because the second half is when I get going and um…get bloody ;)

So yeah & stuff with things.  I have to say that facebook is the weirdest invention ever. Two people in the last 2 days who I thought were gone from my life forever have surfaced.  It’s pretty damn neat actually.  How do you sum up 6 years of life? Is it bad manners to say, “Um, read my blog”?

Creatin’ Stuff

So I think that I have finally hit my stride at work. I’m not coming home so incredibly exhausted anymore (though I’m still tired) and I’m able to do things at night other than fall asleep on the couch before 9pm.   I’ve completed a lot of hats recently among other things.

This hat was knit for the husband out of his own handspun and Ranch of the Oaks Lopi (which is by far the best and softest lopi and they need to sell it online like asap because I’ve got so many questions about it from other knitters – ahem Mette). So anyways, handspun, stripes, and rib can’t go wrong right?

No you can not. I loved this hat so much (so did the Mr.) that I made one for myself (not pictured because it’s the exact same hat).

I’m also working on a pair of Noro Silk Garden Stripy Socks (say that 10 times fast!). I am in love with the results. They are so fantastically random and somewhat ugly that I can’t help but smile.

Last but definitely not least is the Mr’s project.  He has been (per my request) making a much better niddy noddy because the one I bought a few months ago from Ashford sucked the big one.

This handturned version is made out of vibrantly orange paduc and makes a 2 yard skein.  It’s light and well balanced and I will be sad when it doesn’t live at our house anymore.  Basically he’s making these for sale because there isn’t a great market for niddy noddies (at least one that I can find).  More are to come made out of Tiger Maple, Purple Heart, Yellow Heart, Marble Wood, and more.  They will be for sale first during National Alpaca Days at Ranch Of The Oaks this weekend.

with flash & now its obvious we need a white box

If you are interested in the niddy noddies please leave a comment or drop me a line.

In other news I have hit another milestone with Mildred. I have reached the 500th page and am ready for another print out.  So far Mildred is being read by the 3rd non-family friend and my knittin’ kittens are doing their best to make sure that I won’t be able to fit through a door because of my big head.  I really do have the absolute best friends ever.

Ostrich Wrangling (Yes You Read That Right)

One thing I know now that I would have never given a second thought about a year ago is this – Ostriches freak me out.  Their small brains combined with such large and powerful bodies come together in an animal that works mostly off instinct but could kill you.  I dig all animals mostly with out fear.  I respect the ones that could actually hurt me but I don’t fear them.  Maybe it’s being raised around horses that I just don’t think most animals would bite or charge me. Ostriches aren’t most animals.

How did I come to learn such a thing?  Well, my friends Tom & Mette from Ranch Of The Oaks  have ostriches (among the other various critters living on the ranch).  My first real encounter with an ostrich was with the big male, he ran to the gate, dropped to the ground and proceeded to “court” me which involved him splaying his wings and hitting his head against his back in a loud unsettling “THUMP”.   From that day forward I stood away from the fence, something about that “THUMP” really bugged me.

Well, yesterday Tom & Mette sold four of their six birds.  I went up to photograph the craziness that followed.  I do not recommend getting in the pen with an ostrich.  An animal that can kick your head clean off your shoulders is best left to the experts.

I like this series because it shows the 4 stages of “Ostrich OMG”

Hooked and startled.

Pull the head down so they can’t kick your fool head off!  (I’d like to applaud Tom for his crazy ninja move with the rake in the back of the picture.)

And walk the bird to the trailer.

There was running…

In the end four birds were loaded into a specialized trailer and shipped off.

After that was done I spent a few hours as a mill slave processing fiber with Tom & Mette.  I don’t know that I was actually that helpful because they could probably run all the machines alone at once but it was super fun to chat.

One thing I’m super curious about is this – When did this become my life?  I really like it and it’s super fun, but when did ostriches, sheep, fiber, and other such craziness become my life?

Last thing of note is that I let a copy of Mildred out of my hands to be read by my dear friend Becky.  Right now I’m sure she is frowning in confusion and grimacing in pain at my writing.  I’m almost embarrassed enough to avoid her lol.  So far no one but family has started reading Mildred in depth and it kind of scares me to put myself out there like this.  Hopefully it’s not to painful for her!

Edit to add: Comments have been restricted due to spamming issues. I’ll be back to normal soon!

Mildred: Because You Have Been Asking

There’s been a lot of people asking about the Chronicles Of Mildred tab on my blog, a tab that I have left pretty much to rot since I put it up.  It is the very first paragraphs I wrote about Mildred.  Something that started out as roughly 200 words has now morphed into a beast.  Now a whooping 245,749 words I might be circling the end.  Though I use the word ‘might’ because I don’t have a whole lot of control over this story.  Try as I might the characters seem intent on doing whatever they want.  When I try to push them in one direction they go in the other, usually with quite good results.  So I haven’t pushed, I’ve let it grow and expand.

That said I haven’t been updating Mildred on my blog.  One reason is that it just got too big too fast.  I can’t see putting that all up here.  Second, I’m still quite embarrassed about the whole thing.  It’s very Minnesotan to not toot ones own horn.

But with all the emails, from friends & what not I decided to put a few more paragraphs up.  Maybe I will do this until I have the whole first chapter up, maybe I won’t.  Till then you can find some more reading here.

And in case you are wondering about how I write and what my process is, well I have a muse of sort.

He still tries to type but I have to let him know what he’s a much better listener.

OMFG THEN what happens?!!

"OMFG THEN what happens?!!"

Too Many Topics

The days have been a blur of activity but I can’t quite remember what happened in all of them ;)   I know that last Friday was my good friend Nancie’s birthday and we all surprised her at a local restaurant.  The reaction was classic.

Nancie

Nancie

After a delish lunch at Hozy’s we all caravan-ed over to Lisa’s place for some more birthday celebration – knitters style ;)

Lisa & Becky

Lisa & Becky

Then after that we had some brownie Sundays and they were fantastic!

Saturday the Mr and I drove down (up? sideways?) to Valley Village to visit a friend we don’t get to see all that often.  Will and I hung out all the time (and I mean every damn day) when we both lived in Minnesota and it’s just a freak chance that we moved out to California with in months of each other and actually live with in driving distance.

Reflections of Me

Reflections of Me

I finally got a picture that I have been trying for since about this time last year.  I’m a little obsessed with reflective surfaces, especially if they are non-traditional ones.  So last year we passed by a huge tanker truck and I noticed that we were reflected awesomely in it’s hubcaps.  A new obsession was born but it was limited.  Tanker trucks are most usually spotted on the 101 & 5 out here and they aren’t all that prevalent on the road in Ventura.  So I knew my best chance of catching one was on the way to Will’s house.  Bingo.  Also I have to be the passenger for obvious reasons (I hope they are obvious anyways). I have totally been known to take pictures WHILE driving but not on the 101 going into LA thank you very much.  That’s just stupid.

Another accomplishment of epic proportions.

My Word Count

My Word Count

I still can’t quite believe that I’ve written over 200,000 words in one piece that actually relate to each other (That’s 358 pages for those of you that wanted to know).  I printed my story out so far and had it bound at kinkos so that I would be able to give it to people to read and it would be easier than on the computer and get their opinion.  Problem with that is that I’m still really embarrassed that I’m writing a story at all, so I doubt anyone will ever even see it.  Every time I even mention it in public I hear my parents voices “get a real job” because art school or anything fun won’t pay the bills.  This was a reoccurring theme when I was growing up which is maybe why I get nasty jealous when other can totally make a living at something awesome.   Either way, I think that I’m just about 1/2 way done (but when haven’t I said that before?)

In other news the Mr has Thursday and Friday of this week off (which totally rocks hard core) and we are heading up to Lompoc to Ranch Of The Oaks this weekend.  They are having a craft fair up in Lompoc and if you want to stop by to visit alpacas please do stop by! :)   The Mr and I will be there all weekend, I’m offering impromptu knitting help, instructions on knitting in the round, socks, and other techniques.  I’m going to force the Mr to bring his wheel so both of us will be fibery all weekend.

My birthday is a week from tomorrow. I’m not sure how that even happened or how I managed to be 27.  It’s weird, not unpleasant but just different.  Of course I’m also one of those odd ball people who is really looking forward to my 30′s and 40′s.  What can I say? I’m a freak!  Those of you at Anacapa Fine Yarns on Thursdays I will be bringing cupcakes (home made) to knitting so be there or be square. :P

I’m still knitting the Apres` Surf Hoodie. I have finished both the front and back and now am almost done with 1 sleeve.  This is definitely going to be one of my favorite sweaters (I hope!)  Amazingly the weather here has been so gloomy (june gloom) that I could probably even wear it soon if I finished it fast enough!

And just as a reminder for this weekend!

Actual Knitting!

I have finished the back and am close to finishing the front of my Apres` Surf Hoodie.

I am using Beaverslide Dry Goods in their light sportweight.  It’s $30 for a 1lb cone, comes in fantastic colors and is 1976yds per cone. Seriously, it’s amazing.  I can’t wait to finish this sweater because it’s going to get A LOT of wear. I’m leaving off the hood because that’s just how I roll. I don’t wear a hood and don’t need a hood looking like a giant flabby tumor on my back.

I realize I’ve neglected my spinning wheel for a few weeks and have a few bobbins that i really need to ply. Maybe I can get that done next week and free up all the bobbins before heading up to Lompoc.   Lord knows I have enough fiber.

I also have fairly regular visitors to the yard bird wise.

Oriel

Oeriel

and then these guys which crack me up. I want to know what the fly did to the bird!

It’s been cool and kind of cloudy lately but that has been great weather for the flowers which have now really bloomed in earnest.

I may also have a lead on a job but I’m not going to go into too much detail in case I jinx it ;)   Also I’m getting closer to a kind of landmark for me.  I am just about to reach 200,000 words in my story. I printed out (at kinkos online) what I have so far and had it bound. It’s weird to have it tangible and to physically hold it in your hand.
